Relax, take a nap!

Pinay Sense, December 2008 issue)

Fresh from a very memorable US trip, I thought of spoiling myself a little more by freeing my brain from the usual stress and pressure of scribbling a nerve-cracking article for this issue. Hence I would simply just express my heartfelt gratitude again to Politis and to my ever-supportive staff. Tinig Pinoy had reached another milestone as it celebrated its 3rd anniversary last 30th of November 2008. The past 24 months under my editorship were so eventful for both the staff and the Filipino readers but apart from Tinig Pinoy becoming a byword, I could not be happier knowing that our efforts are being appreciated indirectly by the readers’ growing anticipation to get a copy each month. Maraming-maraming salamat po! As the new year begins, this paper will continue serving its purpose for all the Filipino migrants in Cyprus, and we do hope we could give the readers more vital information to help, guide, educate and even entertain in the most positive ways. From today onwards, let us make this new year productive in all aspects of our journey as migrant workers. Work better, learn more, earn more, with a goal set to having peace of mind. As problems in different forms are basically mighty-bonded with us, that some problems just happened unexpectedly and unexplainably instant, then let our two hands be mighty-bonded as well, upwards, to the Almighty. Though life is unpredictable most of the times, yet it is also an opportunity to appreciate how it defines us well. We should not just be counting how many birthdays and new years we reached rather it should be a chance to smile back at the many wonderful and valuable things we have done to ourselves, to family and others. As I end this piece, let me share the words of wisdom from Monsignor Achilles Dakay: “Counting time is not really as important as making the time count. Have a prosperous new year to all of us!

Dinner treat I couldn’t forget

29th January 2009

By Joy B. Miranda

It was an ordinary quite chilly evening in Boston but Costas and I were in the mood to go out for dinner. We went to the famous Legal Sea Foods restaurant and voila! the place was jampacked with costumers. Though we already called for a table reservation earlier, we still waited for about an hour and a half as there were plenty of people waiting before us. Anyway, it was a dinner I couldnt forget because I had only a plateful of lobster which looked tempting in the menu. Taste was good, alright. When the bill came, I wanted to puke. It said: 100 dollars for one plate of lobster! My brain went straight to converting it to Philippine peso: P5,000 or equivalent to more or less four sacks of rice! Oh well…I was feeling guilty for such unnecessary extravagance but it was a wonderful time being spent with Costas, perhaps he thought I was worth it! And so I was, indeed!

Letter from the Readers (Tinig Pinoy)

29th January 2009

(December 2008 issue)

Dear Joy,

My name is Pambos Kourtoulos, I am a British born Cypriot now living in Cyprus. I am a volunteer worker at the social centre in Nicosia, helping with the problems of the Filipino workers.
I read your article with interest regarding your visit to America. I could’nt agree more with what you said Joy. Too many Filipinas are always looking for the green pastures that don’t exist. Many Filipino women that I helped went to Canada and now regretting it. “Kuya, its too coldâ€?, or “Kuya, I have to travel far to go to workâ€?, and the list goes on. They often look at America, Canada and the UK as a special place to have a better life and make money. Wrong, where ever you go, we all have to work hard in this life. Going to America to become a runaway, will only in the end bring you problems, and be banned forever.
If you watch ” Citizen Pinoy ” on the TFC channel, you will realize how strict USA is. It takes people like you to continue with the good work that you do, to explain to our Pinoys the right and wrong. Many times I help girls get their release only to be totally ignored by them later, then when their release date expires, they are back again crying. Take care and have a blessed New Year.

Regards,
Pambos

Dear Pambos,
It is unfortunate that many Filipinas do not seem to understand that whilst the world is experiencing this worrisome global crisis, the chance to obtain a job, big or small, must be considered a blessing. In life, it is not the situation that makes a person, but it should be in the hands of a person to make a better situation. I am privilege to do my own mission of sharing information to the readers and always be a pleasure to be able to help through this field. Thank you for writing me and may you continue extending your hands to my kababayans who need your assistance. God bless the volunteers like you.

Forgive, Forget and Start Anew

29th January 2009

By Johanna Bogbog, Tinig Pinoy Column-writer

FORGIVE
One of the hardest things to do is to forgive. It makes even harder if the person who did you wrong is someone close to you and whom you trust. However, there is a peaceful aura around the word FORGIVE. Whether you are at fault or not, it is still a Christian virtue to forgive. By forgiving, you are doing a clean up of your whole being. Your heart and mind will be free from any mental and emotional baggage, or to be more specific, you are cleaning your heart and mind from any mental and emotional rubbish and opening them for good blessings.

Year 2008 had quickly passed us by but a lot of things had happened. Relationships had been broken, bad words had been exchanged, egos had been trampled, and personalities or characters had been assassinated. Our Filipino community has been divided in two factions again. Concerned parties had been hurt incidentally, intentionally, and unintentionally. But like what I said, it is still best to forgive. It will not do us any good to nourish a grudge in our hearts. So let us not demean ourselves by doing revenge because we will only be hurting a lot of people and ourselves more.

FORGET
Forgiving is difficult but it is even more difficult to forget. Comparably, a wound may heal but the scar is still there. However, time they say is a great healer. Even though how deep the scar it may be, time has a way of making us forget because the heart by nature is where love is. The mind may command us not to forget because the mind by nature records every wrong thing that has been done; still the heart can overpower the mind. Artificially, a scar can be removed permanently thru LASER. Likewise, a scar can be lightened through cosmetics. With this process, we will eventually forget that the scar has been there. In like manner, love and forgiveness will make us forget any wrong doings. Somebody said, I can forgive but I will never forget. But forgiving will not be completed if the offense will not be forgotten. Somebody also said, ‘that person has done the same bad thing to me many times, so how can I forgive and forget?’  Well, others may say that you are stupid for allowing it to happen. Still, God has said to forgive seventy times seven. God also commanded us to leave revenge in His mighty hands. So why can’t we do it? By forgiving and forgetting, we are not losing anything but we are gaining everything.

 START ANEW
There is always a refreshing feeling that the word ’start anew’ brings. It means new beginnings, new mind set, new plans, and most especially, stronger relationships be it with family, friends, business associates, alliances, and with God. Love will not enter into a heart that is full of hatred, and a troubled mind will never have peace hence, no happiness will be experienced.

SO, my friends, and most especially, my fellow Filipinos, ‘Let bygones be bygones’. Let us leave behind any hurt feelings that we have had in the past, forgive and forget any wrong doings and welcome 2009 with a heart full of love and joy, with a peaceful mind, and a vibrant spirit. Let us finally unite and work for a common goal. Wishing everybody a really happy and successful 2009!
